Author Q&A

1. What inspired you to write The Other Sister? Was there a particular real-life event or idea that sparked the story? Funny story…originally I wrote this as a romantic suspense in 2012 because a show I loved dropped after Season 1. The show was The Ringer with Sarah Michelle Gellar. This story is nothing at all like that show but the idea of twins sounded fun.

2. Did you base any of your characters on real people, or are they purely from your imagination? Detective Christian Patrick is loosely based on Jesus! He represents Him well with his testing, patience, mercy, grace, and the way he makes Charlotte feel. As far as physicality, I see Charlotte and Acelynn as you guessed it, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

3. The book explores themes of identity, deception, and survival. What message do you hope readers take away from Charlotte’s story? I hope readers realize that we are not above greed, want, corruption, the feeling of emptiness and wanting to be something we are not. I hope they see that the filtered life isn’t real and that if we don’t learn contentment we can slip over into sins we never thought we’d commit. Each character is a twin heart to Charlotte’s, and the most depraved characters represent God giving those who keep pushing him away over to their depravity. I also hope they see that we justify our sin and choose the easy way out to avoid consequences but often the hard choices are only hard because we are trying to avoid consequences.

4. Which character was the most fun to write, and which was the most difficult? By far Petal was the most fun to write, especially if you enjoy horror elements to some degree though I did talk with my therapist sister about sociopathic behavior in children. Of course I stretch a wee bit in the younger girls but not the tween/teen years.   The most difficult was Charlotte. Most readers want a very likable character and Charlotte doesn’t always make good choices and lives in a morally gray area. So it was hard to write her knowing that she was going to receive little grace but she is who she is—or was until she realized truth.

5. The premise of stepping into someone else's life and uncovering dark secrets is gripping. What techniques do you use to build suspense and tension? I like to use a number of techniques. Word choices for one; creating an atmosphere that feels suspenseful is as much if not more important than writing a physical altercation. I like to use a myriad of conflicts, misdirection, and foreshadowing.

6. Psychological thrillers rely heavily on twists. Did you have any twists that surprised even you as you wrote the book? I rely on outlining heavily so I spend my exploration in the synopsis and brainstorming, so all the fun surprises came to me then and yes, I was surprised by the biggest twist and then giddy to get down to writing it!

7. Without giving spoilers, can you hint at one of your favorite “aha” moments in the book? My favorite aha moment revolves around the THEN portions and Petal.   But when I was writing Christian Patrick, at the end, he had a conversation with Charlotte that I wasn’t expecting and it made me cry because Jesus isn’t ashamed of us and our past is forgiven. We’re new and washed clean. That was a special aha moment for me.

8. What was the biggest challenge in writing this novel? The biggest challenge was thinking about readers to be honest. I knew God was leading me to write a more biblical truth/application story vs. overt faith threads and I wrestled with that until finally I read a scripture about pleasing God or pleasing man and when I chose pleasing God, it all unlocked and went as it should.

9. What can readers expect from you next? Do you have another thriller in the works? I do! I’m contracted for 3 more dark, twisty thrillers that end with hope and the next one will come the summer of 2026. The Girl Upstairs will be in the same vein as The Other Sister (biblical truths and principles and analogy). I just saw the cover concept and it’s brilliant! I can’t wait to bring y’all a “haunted” house set on the cliffs in Maine.

10. What’s the best piece of writing advice you’ve ever received, and how has it shaped your work? The best piece of writing advice came from the Lord. And it’s this: 2 Timothy 4:5  “…be watchful in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, and fulfill your ministry.”  Writing is hard and it comes with hardship from rejections, to being misunderstood, to harsh reviews. But it’s my job to the job of an evangelist and share my faith/biblical truths and what it looks like when those truths are applied. And of course this is ministry which means it’s not my stories, my plans, my genres, my plot. It’s God’s and therefore I write with Him and not FOR Him. That makes all the difference.

Guest Post

Who are some of your favorite speculative fiction authors, and how have they inspired you?

Frank Peretti certainly had an impact on my writing style. Prior to This Present Darkness, I was not an avid reader. However, there was something about this novel that spoke to my heart. It was a reminder that good and evil co-exist in this world. However, we don't have to passively live our lives being tossed back and forth. As Christians, we can cling to the Word of God, lift our petitions to our Heavenly Father, and trust in His faithfulness. In Peretti's story, angels and demons are continually at work, but the angels must wait to intervene at the direction of God after believers have prayed.

When I began The Resurrection Project series, God led me to write in a futuristic setting to highlight where our medical world may be transitioning. Many decisions made today indicate decline of the sanctity of life. In my series, several main characters turn to God to help save vulnerable children's lives. As in This Present Darkness, prayer and scripture  are mandatory in preparing the hearts of the heroes to gain God's wisdom and direction.

During my years as a language arts teacher, I incorporated several Ray Bradbury selections. Mastering the craft of painting word pictures, Bradbury engaged his readers by playing on our senses of hearing, seeing, tasting, and touching. In addition, his plots brought suspense. I will never forget his story, All Summer in a Day, about life on Venus where it rained 364 days a year. A little girl, Margot, had suffered greatly by the dreariness of her surroundings. She was only able to sustain hope by eagerly awaiting the one day of sunshine. As the class prepares to go outside for a glorious adventure, classmates lock the little girl in a closet. The reader can't even enjoy the vivid description of the beauty outside for worrying about poor Margot.

I want my writing to have the same effect on my readers. I want to develop characters with whom my audience can relate. I have been blessed to have several people say that as they read, they found themselves praying for God's favor upon character and situations within the story. What a compliment!

Blog & Review Tour for The Resurrection Project by Tanya Sparks Belvin

The Resurrection Project JustRead Blog Tour

Welcome to the Blog + Review Tour for The Resurrection Project by Tanya Sparks Belvin, hosted by JustRead Publicity Tours!

About the Book

Title: The Resurrection Project

Series: The Resurrection Project Series #1
Author: Tanya Sparks Belvin
Publisher: Tonya Belvin Publishing
Release Date: September 11, 2023
Genre: Christian Futuristic, Medical Mystery

In 2034, medical student Ellen McCarthy took an internship at the mysterious Grindland Institute to fulfill a graduation requirement. But what at first seems like a boring job supervising children soon has her tangled in questions about the Institute’s Resurrection Project. Meanwhile, ER nurse Mamie Simpson is grieving the loss of her daughter, Lainey, and hoping against hope that a new scientific breakthrough will provide a miracle for her and her husband. When Ellen and Mamie's paths eventually cross, both will have to take steps of faith and courage they didn’t think possible to help save the life of a special little girl.

Excerpt:

I stood in the doorway of the cafeteria staring at L2 as she finished her cup of blueberries and
steel-cut oats with eight ounces of skim milk. The Grindland Institute, located in Chapel Hill,
North Carolina, provided its subjects with superfood choices given in precise portions to meet
the exact nutritional requirements for ultimate sustenance and growth. L2’s shoulder-
length chestnut hair glistened like the stainless steel throughout the cafeteria’s antiseptic side.
This area was reserved for the residents of Grindland’s Resurrection Project.

The six-year-old’s white top, knee-length khaki shorts, and specially-designed blue and white
athletic shoes, fit her small frame perfectly. As I observed her, I couldn’t stop thinking that she
was much too young to be so independent. Already accustomed to her daily schedule filled with
physical and academic requirements, L2 was still too short to sit on the bench and have her
feet  touch the ground.

A natural-born music aficionado, L2 always seemed to have a private music channel continually
playing in her mind. As I watched, L2’s tiny fingers started drumming a beat on the table, and
she began singing her favorite song, “Little Liza Jane.”

A Recipe for Research

When discussing my novels with readers, the topic of research frequently arises. “Writing that story must have involved a lot of research,” they’ll say. Or they’ll ask, “What sort of research did you do?” I always thoroughly enjoy these conversations because few topics are as near and dear to my history-nerd heart. The method and madness (for there is usually a method to the madness) of researching historical fiction is a subject with depths too great to fully plumb here, but I will share my recipe for research, such as it is. Consider this article an index card penned in almost-illegible handwriting, timeworn and marked by a splatter or two.

Prep Time: Anywhere from a few weeks to over a year.

Ingredients:

A massive binder divided into categories—If I were writing a novel set in Regency London, I might include broad categories such as: Fashion or Etiquette, as well as those specific to the story such as Newgate Prison or The Duties of a Housemaid. Related notes and other resources are filed by category.

A calendar—I find it helpful to print out a historical month-by-month calendar for my story which I use to map out events and gain a panoramic perspective of the time period. This is especially helpful when writing a novel set during a tumultuous era such as WWII.

Books—I read a steady stream of nonfiction and firsthand accounts (i.e. memoirs, letters, diaries) to immerse myself in the historical narrative and gain inspiration. This is always one of the first places I begin, as delving into these resources usually leads to discoveries that shape my story. For my November release, The Warsaw Sisters, I relied on more than one hundred books throughout the research process.

Documentaries, Oral Histories, Interviews, Photographs/Art, Music—Ideas are sparked and insight gained when I watch an interview with someone who lived through experiences similar to those of my character—obviously this isn’t always feasible, depending on the time period, but it’s a resource I never fail to explore when possible. Or when I look at a photograph or painting or listen to music popular during the era. All of this lends an emotional resonance and I return to these sources whenever I’m in need of fresh inspiration throughout the writing process.

Travel, Historical Sites, Museums—I’ve stood in front of the former Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City and imagined what it might have been like on that day in 1911 when a fire broke out and 146 people, the majority young women, lost their lives. I delve into the story of that tragedy in my novella, Echoes of the Heart, in the Courting Calamity collection. But I’ve also written two novels set in Germany and two that take place in Poland and have yet to travel to either country. I have, however, visited museums related to WWII and the Holocaust. And I’ve “journeyed” the streets of Munich and Kraków through period maps and Google Street View. I’ve also watched videos of tour guides taking groups through various cities and sites related to my stories. There are myriad ways to walk in the footsteps of history.

Experts—After a research deep-dive, sometimes a piece of information remains elusive. This is the time to reach out to experts. Museum staff and historians are often happy to answer questions and share resources. For Within These Walls of Sorrow, the staff at the museum commemorating the Under the Eagle pharmacy generously answered my often-obscure queries and provided me with period photos, floorplans, and recordings of interviews. These resources proved invaluable.

Footnotes—Footnotes are most often associated with non-fiction, but I’ve begun to use them in early drafts of my novels. Juggling dozens of research books means I often forget where a certain detail came from and fact-checking during the editing process turns into frantically flipping through tome after tome because I know I read that somewhere. For example, if I mention a historic building in my manuscript, I might include a footnote referencing a source where the building was described. Since the footnotes are for my eyes only and will be removed by the time anyone else reads the manuscript, I just include the title and page number. This simple tool has saved me countless hours.

Directions (Better known as How It Usually Happens)

Mix above ingredients well. Write. Delete a chapter because after further research, you discover your original scene was inconceivable (extra points if you read that in the voice of Vizzini from The Princess Bride). Cry because you spent three days writing said chapter. Revise. Write. Grow giddy with excitement because you finally have the chance to include that event/detail you read about months ago in an out-of-print memoir. Wonder if the librarians will let you keep an overdue historical treatise a couple of weeks longer if you bribe them with cookies. Try to extract a volume from the bottom of the Leaning Tower of Pisa you’ve somehow constructed out of research books without toppling the whole stack yet again. Keep researching and writing and revising, until finally . . . bon appétit.

Yield—One historical novel. And usually ideas for many more!
