Who are some of your favorite speculative fiction authors, and how have they inspired you?
Frank Peretti certainly had an impact on my writing style. Prior to This Present Darkness, I was not an avid reader. However, there was something about this novel that spoke to my heart. It was a reminder that good and evil co-exist in this world. However, we don't have to passively live our lives being tossed back and forth. As Christians, we can cling to the Word of God, lift our petitions to our Heavenly Father, and trust in His faithfulness. In Peretti's story, angels and demons are continually at work, but the angels must wait to intervene at the direction of God after believers have prayed.
When I began The Resurrection Project series, God led me to write in a futuristic setting to highlight where our medical world may be transitioning. Many decisions made today indicate decline of the sanctity of life. In my series, several main characters turn to God to help save vulnerable children's lives. As in This Present Darkness, prayer and scripture are mandatory in preparing the hearts of the heroes to gain God's wisdom and direction.
During my years as a language arts teacher, I incorporated several Ray Bradbury selections. Mastering the craft of painting word pictures, Bradbury engaged his readers by playing on our senses of hearing, seeing, tasting, and touching. In addition, his plots brought suspense. I will never forget his story, All Summer in a Day, about life on Venus where it rained 364 days a year. A little girl, Margot, had suffered greatly by the dreariness of her surroundings. She was only able to sustain hope by eagerly awaiting the one day of sunshine. As the class prepares to go outside for a glorious adventure, classmates lock the little girl in a closet. The reader can't even enjoy the vivid description of the beauty outside for worrying about poor Margot.
I want my writing to have the same effect on my readers. I want to develop characters with whom my audience can relate. I have been blessed to have several people say that as they read, they found themselves praying for God's favor upon character and situations within the story. What a compliment!
