Excerpt:

“Anyway, I might have something for you to look into. So give me a call back.” Allen
tapped the dash screen and ended the call to Tate, where he’d left the local private
investigator a message. Maybe his friend could help Pepper. It certainly wasn’t in Allen’s
purview as the City Hall liaison to the fire department.

He shoved the truck into park and let out a long sigh.

I have to go. And wasn’t that the truth? The woman did nothing but try to get away from him.

Instead of letting that go around and around in his mind, Allen shoved the door open. He
moved his seat back and dragged the folded wheelchair across his body. He set it down on the
ground beside his vehicle.

In the process, he got the thing mostly unfolded. Enough he could sit in it.
Allen shifted his body to the edge of the seat and clasped the tether that hung from the
grab handle. He braced his foot and lowered himself hand over hand using the rope knots, so
he didn’t fall too fast.

He’d learned that one the hard way.
He grabbed the last knot and lowered his butt into the chair. Shifted his foot. The otherfoot. Shut the door. Clicked his keys.

Done.

He thanked God every chance he got that he’d managed to figure this process out—with
some modifications to his truck so it was drivable for him. People had tried to tell him the
process was too convoluted or that someone with a disability like his couldn’t drive anything
but a van—as if—or a tiny car. Barf. Well, they could quite frankly pry this truck from his
cold dead hands. Or bury him in it.

Author Izzy James Q&A

Me:  Where did you get your inspiration for "Max"? 

Izzy:  I was walking through Yorktown. I love that place. As I passed Thomas Nelson’s house I could almost see him and his wife having tea in their garden. “And what would you think of us now, Mr. Nelson?” I thought. And the story was born.

Me:  Whose character was easier to write, Max or Olivia's?

Izzy:  Max. It’s not always true that the male character is easier to write, but this time he was. He stepped into being for me that day in Yorktown.

Me:  What advice would you give to an aspiring author of writing time travel?

Izzy:  Research a lot. Use primary sources and don’t rely on what you’ve seen in movies.

Me:  Who do you relate to most, Olivia or Max? 

Izzy:  I relate to both of them, but if I have to choose, probably Olivia. As a general rule I don’t have Max’s confidence. Olivia’s path has had some serious rocks in it and she perseveres. I am like that. Life is not perfect, and yet, I have so much to be thankful for.

Me:  Would you say you're a history buff and do you plan on writing more historical fiction? 

Izzy:  I am a huge history fan. Living where I do, in coastal Virginia, I don’t know how I could have escaped it! J  I write mostly historical fiction. My series starting with The Shopkeeper’s Widow and the Yorktown series all take place in coastal Virginia during the 1770s.

Me:  What is bringing you joy today? 

Izzy:  The fresh cold weather. The sunlight as it glints off the water outside my window. The warmth of the tea in my cup. The knowing that I am not alone because the King of the Universe has allowed me to be His.

Excerpt:

She could feel grime sticking to her face and the back of her neck. Her throat burned
from breathing in quarry dust all day, and her skin itched from the heat rash blossoming from her
knuckles up to her wrists. Acadia scratched at it furiously as she walked away from the cart,
drawing blood.

She was so consumed with trying to alleviate at least some of the itching that she walked
into someone standing in front of her. Acadia might as well have walked into a boulder. The
other person didn’t give way at all. As Acadia recoiled back a step, she stumbled.

“Careful,” a gentle grip steadied her.

Her eyes flashed up, and she jerked her arm away.

Oh no.

It was that lunatic again.

“I thought I told you to stay away from me.”

“Hey, you bumped into me this time.”

Acadia scowled. His non swollen eye was crinkled up in a crescent. He was actually
smiling. She couldn’t remember the last time she had seen someone smile, certainly never in
Gehenna unless you counted the serpentine smirks of the guards when they did something
particularly cruel. Not that his smile is particularly pleasant to look at, she thought as she
appraised his disfigured and peeling face.

“I didn’t get your name earlier.”

“And you won’t.” She crossed her arms in front of her chest. “No one uses names here.
It’s meaningless.”

“Not to me.”

She shifted her feet warily.

What was with him?
