Author Interview
1.
Your characters both use pen names. Is there any
significance in giving them both pen names? I had to keep their identities hidden
from each other when they met online as Kylie and Joe, so I needed them to use
pen names for their books. Some authors prefer to use pen names just for
business reasons. In the story there’s a personal reason why Joe had a pen
name, but readers will have to discover that as the plot unfolds.
2. Do you write or have you ever written under a pen name? If not,
have you a pen name in mind you'd use? I once used a pen name for a magazine
article at the recommendation of my editor because of the sensitivity of the
topic – a very randomly chosen pen name.
Imagine my surprise when we discovered after the article was published
that there was a real life author with that name.
3. Your characters coauthor a book, because of a publishers influence.
Is this how it can happen in reality? Could an author be instructed to
cowrite with someone the may not know? I discussed this plot point with another
more experienced author as I was writing the manuscript, and the story was also
vetted by my agent. So yep, it could happen.
4. Have you coauthored a book, and if so what did you take away from
that experience? No, I’ve never co-authored a book. That’s a whole other
ballgame.
5. Was there a certain rom-com that inspired some of this story? Maybe
one that started with, "You've" and ended with, "Mail"?
What about the emailing/chatting prior to knowing one another made you want
Kylie and Joe to experience this introduction to one another? I framed this
story with the idea of it’s a cross between “You’ve Got Mail” and “The Lost
City,” the 2022 movie with Sandra Bullock. I thought the emails between Kylie
and Joe were a fun way to introduce the trivia aspect of the story.
7. The cover to Dedicated to the One I Love is so fun and animated! Did you have a lot or a little input in its design? Do you think that will draw in a larger age range for the audience? P.S. I'm a millennial and I'm sold! Thank you for saying so! The fabulous Courtney Walsh, an amazing author in her own right, designed the cover. It was the first design she sent me, asking me what I thought. It’s my first graphic cover and I think she did a superb job capturing the essence of the story. I couldn’t be more thrilled and the response to the cover has been fantastic, and it appeals to a wide age range.
